We are proud to celebrate and congratulate Dave Hollinshead, who has been awarded the Silver Wolf – the highest award made by The Scout Association for services of the most exceptional nature. Dave’s remarkable journey through Scouting spans more than 60 years of continuous, dedicated service, and his influence can be seen across every level of our District, County, and even internationally.
A Lifetime of Leadership and Service
Dave began his adult Scouting journey in 1966 as a Rover Scout, quickly stepping into leadership as a Venture Scout Leader when the section evolved. His commitment to supporting young people and fellow adults soon led him to the BP Guild and later the Scout Fellowship, where he played key roles in organising District support, fundraising, and helping realise the vision of a District Scout Shop and eventually a District Campsite.
Recognised for his exceptional organisational skills, Dave became ADC (Scouts) in 1985, a role he held for a decade. During this time, he helped deliver unforgettable District camps, including international exchanges with Crewe’s twin town Mâcon, France, and the landmark District Camp celebrating the opening of Milldale Campsite, attended by over 500 young people.
County Leadership and International Impact
In 1995, Dave was appointed Assistant County Commissioner (Scouts) for Cheshire. With this came the responsibility of leading two of the biggest events the County has ever hosted: Chamboree 1998 and 2002, each welcoming more than 2,000 young people from around the world.
Following Chamboree 1998, Dave was invited to Russia to support the creation of their own Millennium Jamboree, Volga 2000. He went on to lead a UK contingent of over 100 young people to this incredible event—an experience that created lasting memories and cultural connections.
Supporting the Next Generation of Explorers
Returning to South West Cheshire in 2003, Dave became District Explorer Scout Commissioner (DESC) at the launch of the new Explorer Scout section. He established four new Explorer Units across the District, personally leading one of them. Under his guidance, young people enjoyed walking, canoeing and camping adventures across Wales and the Lake District, as well as an international expedition to Samara, Russia in 2004.
He also played a vital role in the District Appointments Committee, encouraging and nurturing new leaders who continue to shape Scouting today.
A Driving Force Behind Crewe Gang Show
Dave’s connection with Crewe Gang Show is lifelong—beginning as a young cast member in 1960. In the early 1980s, during a time of decline, Dave was asked to become Stage Manager, a role he embraced with energy and vision.
He led a team that transformed the production with new scenery, lighting innovations (including lasers!), and high-quality staging. Under his leadership, the show expanded to a 10-night run, regularly playing to packed theatres. The success of the show contributed vital funds towards the District’s dream of purchasing their own campsite—now known as Milldale.
Although he stepped down as Stage Manager in 2008, his support for the show has continued ever since. In 2016, he helped to establish a support group of former cast and crew that continues to assist the production today.
Milldale Campsite & District Support
Today, Dave continues to serve as part of the Milldale Campsite Committee, acting as Bookings Secretary since around 2014. Under his stewardship, the site has become busier than ever—welcoming Scouts, Guides, schools, and youth groups from across the UK and abroad. He has overseen multiple improvements to the booking system and deals daily with enquiries for activities and events at the site.
He is also a key member of the District Events Team, contributing his skills, experience, and enthusiasm to activities that benefit hundreds of young people every year.
A Truly Exceptional Contribution
Dave’s Scouting journey is defined by leadership, dedication, and an unwavering belief in the power of Scouting to shape young lives. His ability to bring people together, build strong teams, deliver ambitious projects, and create unforgettable opportunities for young people is nothing short of inspiring.
The Silver Wolf is awarded only for service of an exceptional nature, and Dave’s service exemplifies that standard in every possible way.
Thank You, Dave
From Venture Scouts to Chamboree, from Gang Show to Milldale, from local leadership to international adventures—Dave’s impact on Scouting is immeasurable. We thank him for his decades of passion, commitment, and service to young people and leaders alike.
Congratulations, Dave, on receiving the Silver Wolf. A truly well-deserved honour.
